There are three factors that affect the numismatic value of a coin. The date, mint mark of the coin, the mintage, number in circulation and its condition.J.J. and I have a small coin collection which are kept in individual airtight plastic containers. We never handle them nor try to clean them. Polish - no thanks.
Therefore we were surprised to hear a program on coin collection where the expert was recommending to clean if the coin is dirty with gentle solution such as diluted hydrogen peroxide and soft toothbrush.
Even for young children who are starting their first project of coin collection, it might be prudent to learn whether the coins they have value, as is, or after polishing.
