Dinner with Terttu & Richard at Blackbird Restaurant

Aloha Everyone,

Nielson Tower, the site of Blackbird Restaurant was built by Laurie Reuben Nielsen. He was a British citizen from New Zealand who moved to Manila in the 1930’s looking for business opportunities.

Nielsen was an aviation enthusiast and he proposed building an airport on leased land (a hacienda) to promote trade and travel. On July 31, 1946, PAL became the first Asian airline to cross the Pacific Ocean.

Nielsen Tower is an interesting historical building. From the entrance we walk into the only pre-WWII structure in Makati. Looking around what used to be the airport passenger terminal, we gazed up the round staircase where control tower was located.

Richard, Terttu, J.J. and I were seated at a garden table. Romantic and memorable, the four of us enjoyed wonderful food, gracious service and passed the comfortable time as old friends do.

Aloha -- Cathi
