Call for Prayers (The Ezan)

Aloha Everyone,

Nearly every morning, I get awaken by The Ezan or call to prayers. Usually the first is at 4:00 am or 2 hours before dawn. Muslims pray 6 times a day and the time depends on your location, sunrise and sunset hours.

The devout Muslims pray 6 times a day:
  • 2 hours before dawn
  • Before the sun appears at dawn
  • Midday
  • Afternoon when the shadow cast by objects are equal to the actual height
  • Sunset
  • Last light of the day has disappeared
In Egypt, J.J. and I recall seeing an elderly man spreading his prayer rug on the dusty street to pray. Here in Istanbul, the Ezan are broadcasted from loudspeakers from multiple mosques, but everyone I seems to be going about their own business.

Their chant is pleasant. There are even some similarities to Kundalini yoga chants. However it would be preferable to do 4:00 am chant at a lower volume. Devout Muslims probably get only 5 1/2 hours of sleep at night.

Aloha -- Cathi
