New Acropolis Museum

Aloha Everyone,

Acropolis is the rocky mound that was an ancient citadel. In addition to the Parthenon, visitors can see  Erechthelon, Temple of Athena Niké and the Old Temple of Athena. What visitors can see at the New Acropolis Museum are many fragments of survived sculptures depicting how the area looked at the height of glory. Excellent film presentation gave the history of Parthenon as a Christian temple, then a Muslim Mosque, followed by earthquakes and war explosions that caused massive damages.

Between 1801-1712, under a directive from Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, about 1/2 of the surviving sculptures of the Parthenon were illegally removed. These priceless pieces are one of the major exhibits of the British Museum.

One of the interesting displays that caught our eyes were tools used for masonry. Similar tools are still in use today.

From the 2nd level coffee shop, one can enjoy an unobstructed view of the Acropolis.

The sun eventually came out. There were no crowds. This was a wonderful day to visit the New Acropolis Museum.  Our €10 entrance fee also permitted us to visit the basement excavation areas.

Aloha -- Cathi
