The Palace of the Grand Master

Aloha Everyone,

Built on land that is the highest point of the Medieval City, its massive size is a dominant feature of Rhodes seen from both land and sea.

The Palace of the Grand Master was originally built as a Byzantine fortress at the end of the 7th century. It’s nearly square in shape (80 x 75 meters) and surrounds a courtyard.

By the first quarter of the 14th century, the Knights were inhabitants of the island and they converted the fortress into the residence of the Grand Master. The palace also functioned as an administrative center.

We accessed the palace through two imposing towers, showed our Covid vaccine cards and paid the entrance fee of €4 each

The exhibits are located on the upper floor only reachable by climbing nearly 40 steps. Divided in two sections, the first part spreads over 12 rooms are artifacts of Ancient Rhodes tracing back to 2,400 years of history. The second section is Rhodes from the 4th Century until the Turkish conquest in 1522. The two of us spent nearly two hours and we enjoyed our visit.
