Julian date is a three-digit code which indicates the date of packaging. The dating starts with January 1 as 001 and ends with December 31 as 365. These numbers represent the consecutive days of the year.
My introduction to Julian date actually came very recently when I was unpacking an egg carton from Costco at my Mother’s. My brother who regularly drops in to visit our Mother asked, “So what is the Julian date? Imagine that I have been buying items without realizing that the Julian date is more important than “sell by” dates.
You can store fresh shell eggs in their cartons in the refrigerator for four to five weeks beyond this date. To learn more about fresh eggs go to: https://www.usda.gov/ media/blog/2013/12/23/carton- eggs-true-bakers-dozen
