Custer State Park

Aloha Everyone,

Custer State Park and wildlife reserve is a must visit place in South Dakota. It is the largest state park, located in the scenic Black Hills. We paid an annual park entrance license of $30 and displayed the sticker on our windshield. This allows us to enter all 13 South Dakota State Parks. The license is also valid for most of the 43 recreation areas, 4 nature areas, 2 historic sites and a trail.

Named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, the park covers over 71,000 acres of beautiful, hilly terrain. South Dakotans are proud that the park had been voted as one of the top 10 state parks in the country.

Throughout the year, Custer State Park is a venue for numerous annual events that attracts instate as well as visitors from all over the world. Perhaps the most popular and well publicized event is the Annual Buffalo Roundup. This year it will be on September 28 and there is no entrance fee.

The roundup is a way to manage the size of the herd as well as an opportunity to brand and vaccinate the calves.

Tonight we are comfortably settled in the Stockade Lake South Campground within the Custer State Park. Our site has electric and water hookups and nearby are toilets and shower facilities comparable to KOA.

Aloha -- Cathi
