Black Hills National Forest

Aloha Everyone,

Black Hills National Forest stretches over South Dakota and Wyoming. This morning, from Hot Springs/Black Hills KOA to Rapid City, we decided to take a road traversing familiar towns from our previous visits. We passed the town of Custer, briefly saw the Crazy Horse Memorial Mountain at a distance, and drove by charming Hill City.

The haze which we noticed as we drove became more pronounced as we approached Rapid City. Surrounded by rolling hills, no rain or wind in sight, the haze just hanged like a heavy blanket.  According to the National Weather Service, forest fire smoke from western Montana, southern Washington, Oregon, northern California and Idaho, are affecting northeastern Wyoming as well as western South Dakota. "Smoke from large wildfires like those burning now is often transported hundreds or thousands of miles when it gets into the upper atmosphere," said an air quality program manager.

As adage says, “3 times is a charm”. On our third visit to our P.O. Box and mail forwarding service company, we finally were able to get Honu’s new registration sticker!

Tonight we returned to KOA Hot Springs.

Aloha -- Cathi
