Texas Panhandle to Elk City, OK

Aloha Everyone,

Daphne at the Texas Visitor Information Center in Amarillo approached J.J. and me with big smile. She offered to take our photos with Texas displays. We are grateful to Daphne and her colleague who answered our questions about the state parks located in the Panhandle region. Friendly, kind, courteous with genuine hospitality are what we have always enjoyed at Texas visitor centers.

Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyon State Parks require more than just a drive-though. We will include these two outstanding destination parks in our future Texas travel.

J.J. readily agreed to having our lunch at the touristic but serving excellent food at the Big Texas Steak Ranch. This is our second visit. The restaurant was getting filled but today there was no challenger to finish the 72 oz steak.

J.J. had a 16 oz steak and I ordered a salad and grilled hamburger steak which I ate 1/2 without the buns. Both of us had half of our food packed for dinner. Our bill of $41 inclusive of tip was very reasonable as the price was actually for four very good meals.

Elk City in Oklahoma is approximately 110 miles west of Oklahoma City. It is in the middle of nowhere but for us this is a special KOA Campground. On our previous stay, about a year and a half ago, we experienced our first and so far the only tornado. I recall my feelings of fear, excitement in anticipation of nature's fury.  The tornado came within 50 miles from our location. This time was very different. It was breezy but hardly windy and with the strong WiFi, I was able to practice an hour long walking meditation listening to the Kundalini Yoga mantras.

Aloha -- Cathi
