Making Agar-Agar

Aloha Everyone,

My brother is an excellent chef and he whips up clam chowder and fancy Chinese potstickers like a pro. So when he brought us agar-agar, I assumed that it was difficult to make.

He generously showed me how to prepare agar-agar easily and quickly. For those of you who are unfamiliar with agar or agar-agar, it is made of seaweed.

You start with a package like one of these each with of pre-measured agar.

My brother also uses regular JELL-O of various flavors.

One packet of agar with one 3 oz size JELL-O. Pour the mixture into 2 cups of hot water and bring to boil stirring constantly with a whisk.

Pour into flat container. I made 2 with JELL-O and one with orange juice and agar-agar. Cool then place in the refrigerator.  When the agar is firm, cut into desirable size. Mix various colors and serve with season fruits. I find blueberries, strawberries and raspberries go particularly well.

Aloha -- Cathi
