Return To Hurricane, UT Via US Highway 89A Glen Canyon To Vermillion Cliffs, AZ

Aloha Everyone,

US Highway 89A traverses Glen Canyon National Recreation Area to Marble Canyon, Paria Plateau, and Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. This is roughly a 110 mile drive through rugged country.

At Glen Canyon, we met Katarina, a ranger with the National Park Service showing visitors a replica egg of the California Condor. She also pointed to a black bird on the railing of the bridge. She told us that it is a 3 year old female with a wing span of over 9 feet. Very exciting for a novice birder. Unfortunately, the Condor was too far. I needed a telephoto lens.

Bella and Bubba are St Bernards traveling with Linda and Martin. Linda and Martin have been on the road for 2 years come June. The couple also share a Hawaii connection as their son and daughter-in-law taught biology and Special Ed respectively in Kahuku. Two grandchildren were born in Hawaii.

Our drive took us through the Kaibab National Forest with pine trees. At 7,897 ft elevation, patches of frozen snow were seen on the ground.

For lunch, we made a 7 miles one way detour from  Fredonia, AZ to Kanab, UT looking for something more interesting than fast food. We stopped at  Luo's Chinese Restaurant, an obvious conversion of a previously Mexican diner. My vegan tofu with vegetable and J.J.'s Sichuan Shrimps with vegetables both served with hot sour soup was far better than expected.

Safely arrived at Hurricane, UT. During the two weeks we've been away, buds on trees have opened and lush green was a welcoming sights.

Aloha -- Cathi
