Driving Through Empty Barren Land To Gallup, NM via Shiprock

Aloha Everyone,

US Route 491 crosses Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. Sections of the route we took today were desolate, bleak and barren with miles and miles of brown fields. Seeing small scattered houses nestled against low lying mesas, it is easy to imagine the everyday challenges they face. We saw a large truck with 5000-10,000 gallons capacity tank delivering water to 300-500 gallons home tanks.

Shiprock may also be spelled in two words, Ship Rock is located on the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico. Known as Tsé Bitʼaʼí or the Winged Rock in Navajo, it is a volcanic rock that stands 1,700 ft from the base. There are different versions, but I like the ancient folk myth that tells how the rock was once a giant bird. And the bird transported ancestral people to their sacred land.

Interesting cloud that resembles a White Heron in flight.

Arrived in Gallup, New Mexico for a late lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant, El Sombrero.

J.J.'s Enchiladas with blue corn wrap and my corn Tamale.

Tonight's evening exercise walk around the RV park was particularly gratifying as J.J. and I observed the altering colors of the sky.

Aloha -- Cathi
