Our First Close Encounter with Roadrunners at Balmorhea State Park, TX

Aloha Everyone,

Chilling 32 degrees Fahrenheit  this morning. Downtown El Paso from I-10 appears as brown as its surrounding brown adobe hills.

We are noticing more border guards check points. The large RV towing a small car was stopped for nearly 8 minutes. With Honu, they just waived us on

.
Chuy's Restaurant seems to be the best place to eat in Van Horn. The minute we saw the colorful green and red painted building and walls, J.J. and I recalled that we've eaten there before. There are Califoria-Mex, Arizona-Mex, Southwest-Mex and of course Tex-Mex dishes. I love Mexican foods, but tomorrow I would like to eat something from another region of the world.

We are staying over night at Balmorhea State Park. The Texas State Park Annual Pass we purchased for $70, will allow us to access over 90 state parks. The entrance fee of $7 per person each time we access a state park is waived. We figured by visit five, we recover our initial investment. Pass is good for one year.

Balmorhea State Park with the Davis Mountains backdrop is a family-friendly place. According to the booklet on the park, it is best known for the 24 million gallons per day spring located within the park. Karl, the Park Superintendent told us that this is one of the most popular destinations. During the summer, the park receives as many as 1,500 visitors in a single day.

My first close encounter with a roadrunner and seeing a large flock of American Coots made our walk around the park extra special and memorable.

Aloha -- Cathi
