Ten Chimneys, National Historic Landmark

Aloha Everyone,

Ten Chimneys, located in Genesee Depot, Wisconsin is the estate lovingly created by Broadway legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. While I love Broadway musicals and plays, their names are not familiar to me or to J.J.

However, when we read that some of the respected people in theater including Laurence Olivier, Katherine Hepburn, Noel Coward had visited Ten Chimneys, we decided to investigate.

The estate takes its name from the total of ten chimneys present on the grounds. Guided tours take visitors to some of the buildings including the main house, a cottage, a Swedish log cabin studio, pool and a pool house, creamery, greenhouse, barns, stables etc.

Each year, up to 10 of the top regional stage actors in the United States are invited to attend an 8-day immersion experience and master program. In 2013, Alan Alda was one of the Master Teachers.

J.J. and I were invited to join the one and a half walking tour which was about to begin. But, the noon-time heat and many flying insects on the ground deterred us from being outdoors. Instead, we took a tour of the visitor center to appreciate a sampling of the vast and interesting personal collections of the Lunts.

Aloha -- Cathi
