Ever since J.J. and I watched Steven Spielberg's 1977 film, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," I wanted to see Devil's Tower.
Looming more than 1,200 feet above the eastern plains of Wyoming, it is massive and very impressive. The tower is an igneous intrusion or laccolith, natural wonder. Hikers are attracted to the tower's sheer rock surface and hundreds of columns and cracks. All climbers are required to register at the ranger station and check in after their climb.
According to one tourist publication, about 1% of the 400,000 annual visitors climb the tower.
Hazy atmosphere caused by wild fires burning in several north-western states made everything appear blurred.
J.J. pulled off Honu at the side of Highway 14 where signs caution visitors, "Do not feed prairie dogs'. There must have been at least 100 prairie dogs. They popped their heads then erecting upper half of their body to survey. They communicate to others by chirping.
Arriving at Deer RV Camping in Buffalo, Wyoming. Honu was greeted by a flock of wild turkey going about their business.
Steve and Carol are from Georgia. They are here for the summer doing work camp.
When I asked them about "Crazy Woman" in reference to a real estate office we drove by in town, they referred me to a newspaper article on the Legend of the Crazy Woman.
