Bears and Yellowstone

Aloha Everyone,

Most of us associate wildlife sightings in Yellowstone with bears. J.J. recalls reading how around 1950s, for guests staying at hotels within national parks, they were given opportunity to observe bears at a close range. This was accomplished as one of the evening entertainments was the hotel staff would take their guests to a local garbage dumpster to watch bears come and eat garbage. Now with state and federal regulations, bears cannot access garbage as they must be stored in bear resistant metal trash bins.

About 3 days ago, or at the same time the two of us were visiting Yellowstone, a disappointed visitor wrote the following note which has gone viral.

"Our visit was wonderful but we never saw any bears. Please train your bears to be where guests can see them. This was an expensive trip not to see any bears."

This weekend, we are back in Rapid  City, South Dakota.

Aloha -- Cathi
