The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas

Aloha Everyone,

The Big Texan Steak Ranch is a destination. Located just off I-40 Historic Route 66 in Amarillo, Texas, it is famous for the Big Texan steak challenge: Finish a 72 oz steak along with a salad, baked potato and bread within an hour and it is free. Otherwise, the cost for the 4.5 pound steak meal is $72.

While J.J. and I were in the restaurant, a challenger was seated at the table on an elevated platform. There was a flashing neon counter as to his time remaining. He failed the challenge.

J.J. had a ribeye steak and I ordered a prime rib. After enjoying vegetable soup with chunks of meat and corn bread, I could only consume about 20% of my steak.

Ashley, a lovely person with bubbly personality, told us that their "humongous desserts" are to die for. Perhaps we will stop just for dessert the next time we are in Amarillo, Texas.

As of this morning, we have done 900 hours of driving in Honu. All except for the insignificant time when I was behind the wheels, J.J. has done all the driving.

Texas Panhandle is the rectangular area on the northern part of the state bordered by New Mexico to the west and Oklahoma to the north and east.

My image of the region was dry, wide-open country where you see miles and miles of nothingness. With unusual amount of rainfall this year, the land is beautiful, green and dotted with wild flowers.

Tonight we are staying at the Santa Rosa Lake State Park in Santa Rosa New Mexico.

J.J. had the left-over of my prime rib while I enjoyed a slice of delicious watermelon from Oklahoma and edamame from California.

Aloha -- Cathi
