Oklahoma and the Chikasaw Nation

Aloha Everyone,

The following information is from "A Look At Oklahoma - A Student Guide," courtesy of the Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department.

1). State Song - Oklahoma! By Rodgers and Hammerstein

2). "Oklahoma" comes from the Choctaw words; "Okla" meaning people and "humma" meaning red, translates "red people,"

3) The official Oklahoma meal is chicken fried steak and okra.

4). Oklahoma has more man-made lakes than any other states with over one million surface acres of water and 2,000 more miles of shoreline than the Atlantic and Gulf coasts combined.


5) Five Civilized Tribes - Their lands ceded by the Osage and  Quapaw tribes to the United States was turned over to the Native Americans of the old Southwest.  Known as the Five Civilized Tribes, they are the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek and Seminole. 

6) The Chickasaw Nation is a federally recognized Native American nation, located in Oklahoma. Chikasaw Country, per their published  guide  has 20 gaming sites.  One of the properties they own is the land where Winstar World Casino and Resort and RV Park is located.
