Tatanka (Bison) Everywhere

Aloha Everyone,

Out first sighting of bison was more of silhouette against the overcast sky. Almost simultaneously J.J. and I both exclaimed, "Tatanka!" For those of you who watched the epic western film "Dances with Wolves" directed, produced, and starring Kevin Costner, "tatanka" referred to bison bulls in the Sioux Indian language.

When early American settlers traveled west, they called the bison, "bufello" due to their similar appearance to the creatures that are found in East Asia and Africa. The bison and buffalo are actually two different genus groups. However, the name did stick, and most Americans call these large animals in North America, buffalo. Here J.J. is patiently waiting for the animal to come closer.

Bison are huge with thick furs and a large hump. Their horns are small, but sharp. Their bearded face seen from the front gives a bit comical appearance.

Many came far too close for my comfort. One of them walked up to the car parked two stalls away and licked the front fender.

One of the many large herds we saw in the Custer State park. Many were nursing calves.

This weekend is the opening of the summer season and state parks are offering free admission and free fishing. Kris and Gary from Newcastle, WY were enjoying their fishing trip.

Kris showed us two Rainbow Trouts they caught.

One of the two, one lane tunnels we drove through in the Custer State Park.

We noticed several unusual rock formations of Needles found in the Wild-Life Loops as we circled the Custer State Park.

Halcyon afternoon of family outing scene at the Sylvan Lake.

Beautiful trees to feast our eyes.
